John & Beth's Verwood Turf & Pebble Garden
A completely unique back garden, with a flowing premium turf lawn framed by charcoal edging and set in a sweep of 30–50 mm Scottish pebbles, built on a base designed to keep invasive mares tail out.
After
BeforeBrief
John and Beth wanted a garden that looked like no one else’s. Rather than a standard rectangular lawn, we marked out a sweeping curved shape on the ground and built the whole design around it, combining soft premium turf with the texture of Scottish pebbles and a crisp charcoal edge.
Constraints
The garden was affected by mares tail, a deep-rooted invasive weed that is notoriously difficult to stop. We dug down further than we normally would, laid extra layers of membrane and compacted a deeper Type 1 sub-base to suppress regrowth.
Our solution
We excavated deeper than usual, installed extra membrane and compacted Type 1 to block the mares tail, then laid premium turf in the marked-out curved shape. Charcoal edging gives the lawn a sharp, flowing outline, and 30–50 mm Scottish pebbles fill the surrounding area for a low-maintenance, distinctive finish.
